Eagles Stopped by Devils in Final
MADISON, N.J.- Eastern University Women's Lacrosse battled throughout but fell 10-7 in the Freedom Conference Championship match at FDU-Florham. Courtney Reinhold led the way for the Eagles with three goals.
Reinhold scored her last two goals in the final four minutes of the first half to tie the score at 4-4 in a possession-oriented opening period. Allie Fultz had the only other goal of the first half on a free-position shot. Head Coach Camrin Azzaranowas pleased with the patience of her offense through the opening period, and felt that her group of attackers was successful in working to frustrate the higher-seeded Devils.
Fultz gave the Eagles their only lead of the match five minutes into the second half on her second free-position goal of the day. FDU (13-6), however, grabbed momentum and scored six straight goals to build a 10-5 lead with only six minutes to play.
Sarah Blaylock, who had missed much of the latter part of the year with injury, scored a pair of goals to start an Eastern rally late, but the Eagles (8-10) ran out of time to complete the comeback.
After the contest, Eastern Head Coach Camrin Azzarano spoke highly of the effort of her players.
"The girls were prepared in their mindset," she said, "and they executed the game plan. Our defense was stellar. Kristy Getsay set the tone early with a huge save, and our group worked as a unit throughout the game."
The Eastern offense broke down on a couple occasions in the second half, and the Devils took advantage."We had three defenders battling through injuries," Azzarano continued, "and their toughness was outstanding today."
Breana Kilpatrick led the way for the hosts with three goals.
Kristy Getsay made 11 saves in goal to keep the game within reach for the Eagles.
