Cross Country Races At DeSales
Twenty teams competed in the women's 6k race while 22 competed in the men's 8k. Coach Wilson described the DeSales course, the site for last season's MAC Championship, as a hilly course that can lead to slower times. However, Eastern's top four men finished with personal bests on Saturday, all coming in under 30 minutes. Eastern's Colin Gordon finished in 39th with a 28:36.52, Caleb Fitzgerald finished in 47th with 28:52.23, Nicholas Trombley finished in 29:57.26 and Jesse Martinez just edged the 30-minute mark, coming in at 29:59.95. Coach Wilson said that the men ran this course the right way. "The first and second miles were slow and uphill, so when they heard the slower split times, they had to not let that frustrate them," he said. "They had to stick with it and bring their times down in the third and fourth miles."
On the women's side, Eastern's Josey Rupert medaled, finishing No. 17 with a time of 25:21.08. Stephanie Hogan and Katrina Schmid finished in the top 50 with times of 26:41.82 and 26:59.73. Coach Wilson noted that Schmid dropped 1:10 off her time since last year's DeSales meet.
Eastern's regular season comes to an end as next week's Haverford Invitational has been canceled. The Eagles top 12 runners will compete at the MAC Championship on Saturday, Oct. 27.
