Eagles Fall to Colonels
The host Colonels led 32-27 at the half and built that lead to 19 points with a 22-9 run to start the second half. Wilkes relied heavily on the experience of their starting backcourt on senior day. Senior Tyler Breznitsky recorded a career-best 24 points to lead all scorers.
His junior backcourt partner Chris Shovlin had 20 points, seven assists, and five rebounds. Shovlin, the top scorer in the league this year, made his debut for the Colonels in 2004. The veteran point guard did not play in Eastern's 68-65 win in late January. Wilkes had 23 turnovers in that game. This evening, with Shovlin at the helm, that number was reduced to 13. Several of those turnovers came in the final minutes after the result was secured for the hosts. He and Breznitsky hit 17-of-19 foul shots.
In contrast, the Eagles were led by a pair of freshmen. Tyler McGrath made 9-of-12 foul shots for a team-best 17 points. Malcolm Garrison struggled from the floor, but made 6-of-7 from the line for 11 points.
The game nearly ground to a halt in the second half as the two teams took 47 free throws and were whistled for 34 fouls in the final 20 minutes. Eastern shot a respectable 72 percent for the game. Wilkes made 25-of-31 for 81 percent.
The Eagles only pushed the lead inside fifteen for a few brief seconds, and the Wilkes lead was back at 72-53 with 1:25 on the clock.
The Eagles closed the gap to 72-61 on four straight layup baskets from Dan Werth in the closing moments of the game. It was only enough to produce the first career double-double for the junior forward. Werth finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Colonels, who dropped their first eight league games, have won four straight. If Manhattanville beats King's tonight, there will be four teams tied in the fifth spot in the Freedom Conference. FDU-Florham has five wins, but the Devils have games with league-leaders DeSales and Delaware Valley on the schedule. In short, the whole league has a shot at the final playoff spot if Manhattanville wins tonight and DeSales wins at FDU tomorrow. Those games were pushed back due to the winter storm this weekend.
The Eagles host FDU on Tuesday night in their final home game of the year.
