Eagles Explode For 21 Runs Against Griffins
Eastern first baseman Greg DeSarro batted 5-for-6 on the day with two doubles and three RBIs. DeSarro moved into second place on Eastern's all-time career hits list (154 career hits) and saw his season batting average elevate from .333 to .358.
Every batter in Eastern's lineup (including pinch hitters) recorded a hit in the win; every starter had at least two hits. Ryan McMenamin, Eric Rossi, Tyler Orr, Greg DeSarro and Anthony Messina each had three RBIs.
Orr smashed his seventh home run of the season to left center to cap a 10-run seventh inning. Orr's seven homers are enough for second on Eastern's all-time single season record list.
The Griffins scored twice in the first inning off Eagles' pitcher Barry Jost, but Jost settled down and tossed five solid innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on nine hits and two walks. Korey McCormack threw three innings of scoreless relief.
The Eagles were back to the top of the lineup in the third and batted all the way through the lineup in that inning, scoring seven runs on eight hits. Eastern's DeSarro, Messina, and Angelo Kelly hit back-to-back-to-back doubles in the inning.
With a 7-2 lead, the Eagles scored twice more in the fourth. For the second straight inning, DeSarro doubled to score Tyler Orr all the way from first base. DeSarro scored on an RBI-groundout to make the score 9-2.
The Griffins and Eagles traded runs in the fifth. Orr prevented a Griffins' run from scoring in the fifth when he gunned down Gwynedd Mercy's Dante Cassano at home attempting to score on a single to center. Orr's strong throw arrived a few feet up the third base line, but catcher Eric Rossi was ready for that and applied the tag on Cassano.
Leading 10-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles added 10 more runs to their score. The Eagles nearly batted around twice in an inning that the Griffins kept going with four errors. Rossi and Orr delivered the big hits in the inning with Rossi smacking a three-RBI double to unload the bases and Orr hitting his two-run home run.
The Eagles added another run in the eighth with a pinch-hit RBI single by Joe Grato.
Gwynedd Mercy sent eight different pitchers to the mound; 30 Griffins saw playing time on Tuesday.
The Eagles host Widener University tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference game.
