Eagles Roll Past Arcadia
Eleven different Eastern players scored in the opening half. Brendan Stouber was the first player to repeat in the goal scoring column with a nice finish in transition after the Eagles won a man-up faceoff. The long-stick-midfielder had scored the third goal of the game on a on the crease with six minutes left in the first quarter.
Eastern opened the scoring with a pair of goals in unsettled situations. Grant Ferguson scored his only goal of the day after AJ Ryan picked off a pass in the defensive zone and ran the clear into the attack. Ferguson caught the ball at 12 yards and took a step in and fired low for his 45th of the season. The Eagles doubled their lead seconds later after Ryan picked up a rebound and tossed a pass out to Ron Johnson fifteen yards from goal. Johnson fired a low shot from distance for his fifth of the year.
The Knights got several saves from starting goalie Cory Sonderschafer and a little help from the posts as the Eagles fired a series of shots but could not increase the lead until Stouber's first.
JC Hofmeister made it 4-0 with five minutes to play before Arcadia leading scorer Chris Jacovino closed the gap to 4-1. Matt Soldano finished a strong left-handed shot with 11 seconds to play in the first quarter for a 5-1 edge. Eastern had a 17-3 edge in shots through the first period.
The Eagles grabbed control of the game in the second quarter. Zac Ivy finished from just above goal-line extended with a shot to the lower corner just over a minute into the period. Andrew Travers then scored his first of three on the day on a pass from Ferguson to make it 7-1 with 11 minutes to play. After a little lull in scoring, the floodgates opened at the eight minute mark with six goals in a three minute period.
Eric Waibel, Stouber, Will Johnson, and Chris Farrar each scored before Ivy picked up his second of the day on a feed from Farrar. Ivy caught the ball on the crease and finished in style as he was pushed into the crease. Farrar had assists on the final four goals of the half. Three of those goals were scored by Ivy. Shawn Farmer scored the final goal of the half.
Eastern goalie Aaron Benz made just three saves int he opening half to pick up the win before giving way to Pat Groschan for the second half. Eastern's first group spent the second half supporting the rest of their squad in the second half. Travers scored twice and Evan Werner and Kyle Gillam also found the goal. Groschan made seven saves in relief.
Arcadia scored the final goal of the afternoon with less than two minutes to play.
Eastern head coach Kevin Wallace was very impressed with the first-year Knights.
"They have a coach who has been around quality programs, and that is what he is trying to build," Wallace noted. "He understands that they are building for the long term, and his team has continued to get better through the year. They are doing things the right way."
The Eagles host the four seed next Wednesday. Coming into today, it looked like that would be DeSales, but the Bulldogs won at King's today to put King's DeSales and Misericordia into a three-way tie for second with one game to play.
