Eastern's Brielle Thompson fends for a ball in Tuesday's game against the Messiah Falcons.

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern Women's Soccer fell 3-0 Tuesday afternoon to Messiah College, the reigning national champions.

The Eagles and the Messiah Falcons battled through 28 scoreless minutes to start the game. At the end of the 28th minute, the Falcons' Alicia Frey broke the tie with a bizarre bouncing goal. Eagles' goalie Elayna Simpson started moving to her left as Frey took a left-footed shot from 20 yards out. However, the shot defected off Eastern defender Emily Roquemore and bounced into the net to Simpson's right before she could recover.

Eastern came close to tying the game eight minutes later. Cait Mitchell served a ball towards the Falcons' back line that forward Emily Cole won from two defenders and touched back to Christine Colman. Colman lobbed a shot over the Falcons' goalie that ricocheted off the crossbar.

The shot was however, only one of two that Eastern took in the entire game.

The Falcons scored twice in the second half including one goal after a fluke clear that spun back into Eastern territory and was finished by the Falcons' leading scorer, Nikki Elsaesser.

Eastern keeper Elayna Simpson added seven saves to her season total to 65.

Head coach Dan Mouw said he thought his team stayed competitive throughout the game and made adjustments to take away some of what Messiah was trying to do. He said Messiah was good enough to counter those adjustments and win the game. Ultimately, Mouw said that it can only help Eastern improve by playing good teams like Messiah.

Eastern plays another Commonwealth team on Saturday at noon when they face the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen.
