Eagles Race to 3rd at Messiah

Josey Rupert set a school record Saturday for the Women's 6K with a time of 23:33.

GRANTHAM, Pa.-- Eastern University's Cross Country teams took different paths to get there, but both finished third at the Messiah Invitational. The women, led by a a pair of top 10 finishes, finished behind Gettysburg and Messiah. The Men used a tight pack in the top third of the field to finish behind the same two schools.

Josey Rupert continues to impress with a strong junior campaign. She finished second overall in 23:33 on a slow and rolling 6K course. The time shatters the Eastern program record for a 6K course. She was a full 21 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.

Adrienne Borelli finished in eighth place in the middle of a tight group about a minute behind Rupert. The top two teams were both able to get each of their seven scoring runners inside Eastern's third runner. Steph Hogan, Katrina Schmid, and Alyssa Schock crossed the finish line in a tight group to close out the Eastern scoring.

Colin Gordon battled the tough five-mile course to a solid 28:53, and the next three Eastern men were within 40 seconds of his pace. Nick Trombley, Jon Combies, an Aaron Reed all recorded spots in the top 21. Jesse Martinez closed out the scoring for the men.

"It was a good day for both the men and the women," head coach Mike Wilson said. "That was the time we were looking for Josie to run, and to do it on such a tough course is very impressive."

The Eagles have another long break before racing in the prestigious Paul Short Invitational in early October.
