Eagles Edged By Ducks
ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern Women's fell 2-1 in Tuesday's non-league game against the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks.
Eastern freshman forward Emily Cole connected in the 62nd minute for her third goal of the year. The Eagles had opportunities, taking 20 shots compared to the Ducks' eight attempts. Head coach Dan Mouw said he thought the Eagles had several good scoring chances when they applied more pressure offensively. "Their goalkeeper made a couple really solid stops," he said, "and we also had a couple shots that I think we would love to attempt again."
An unfortunate own goal put Eastern down 1-0 in the 38th minute. Coach Mouw said, "We had some great moments in the match, but they were able to capitalize on a couple serious breakdowns."
Stevens took a 2-0 lead in the 56th minute. Six minutes later, Emily Cole brought the Eagles within one. Cole collected a ball off a Stevens' defender's touch on the right wing, cut inside to the 18 and smashed a brilliant left-footed kick into the upper-left corner. [click here for video]
Coach Mouw was glad to Michelle Brown back in the lineup for the first time in a month. "Having Michelle back in the line-up, even on a limited basis, gave us an attacking presence in the midfield that really helps our squad," he said. "We are hopeful that she will continue to gain strength and become a force in league play."
Eastern dropped to 2-6-1 with the loss while Stevens evened out to 5-5.
The Eagles face Wilkes University on the road Saturday at 11 a.m. In this upcoming conference-opener, the Eagles will look to continue to play with the urgency they displayed in today's second half.
