Eagles Claim Top Seed

The Eagles recognized their senior class prior to Saturday's game.

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern Men’s Soccer locked up the top seed in the Freedom Conference with a 1-0 win over the FDU-Florham Devils.

With a 5-1-1 record through conference play, the Eagles claimed home-field advantage in the playoffs. They will host the No. 4 seed FDU-Florham Devils again on Wednesday in a 2 p.m. start.

The Eagles held the Devils to three shots all game—none on goal—en route to their 12th shutout this season.

Eastern’s Eric Giovagnoli netted the game’s lone goal in the 67th minute after receiving a beautiful pass from Ben Barnhart. Giovagnoli closes the regular season with 12 goals, second best in the conference.

The Eagles took 13 shots in the win, and for most of the game kept FDU-Florham out of the attacking end.

Junior Jair Saenz nearly put the Eagles ahead in the 34th minute with a free kick strike from about 25 yards out. After the Devils’ Tommy Asselta picked up a yellow card for a hard take-down of Mitch Osterhouse, Saenz lined up for the kick and curled a ball that caromed off the crossbar and back in front of the goal but the Eagles were not able to finish it before the Devils cleared it.

It wasn’t until the 67th minute that the Eagles took the lead. The play started with Joe Centeno quickly rolling a pass to John Remsburg who chipped the ball over midfield to Ben Barnhart. Barnhart made a quick turn and slid the ball ahead between two Devils’ defenders finding Eric Giovagnoli on the run. Giovagnoli forced the goalie to come out to him and then calmly slid the goal right past the sliding keeper.

Eastern dodged a bullet in the 89th minute when FDU-Florham took a corner kick and had two men open on the back post but neither got a touch on the ball and the cross rolled harmlessly out of bounds.

The Eagles then warded off the Devils attack for the game’s final minute and senior Brandon Reichart cleared the ball into the swimming pool adjacent Olson Field to end the game.

Six Eastern seniors were honored before the game: Brandon Beaumont, Mitch Osterhouse, Sean Bonner, James Le, Brandon Reichart and Austin Stover. These seniors will get at least one more home game when they host the Freedom Conference Semifinal on Wednesday.
