Eagles Drop Home Opener

Emily McPeak had a pair of assists and three rebounds in Eastern's loss to Cabrini.

ST. DAVIDS,Pa.- The visiting Cabrini College Cavaliers jumped out to an early lead, and a foul plagued Eastern University women's basketball team was unable to forge a comeback. The Cavaliers (2-1) led 37-18 at the half and pulled away to a 75-40 win.

The Eagles opened the scoring on a Kaitlyn Dougherty lay-up and answered a Cabrini 3-pointer with a jumper from gina DiDomenico. Senior guard Brittany Sandone scored five straight points to spur an 18-4 Cavalier run. Sandone went over the 1,000 point mark for her career with a her second basket in the run.

Eastern cut the deficit to nine on an Emily Lavin lay-in and a pair of free throws from DiDomenico, but Cabrini answered with an 11-0 run to effectively put the game away.

The Eagles made only  7-of-26 field goal attempts and struggled to take care of the ball against a persistent Cabrini defense. The Cavaliers shot 42 percent from the floor and had just four first-half turnovers to build the 19 point edge at the break.

Eastern's comeback hopes were dealt a serious blow when Meghan Nowak picked up her fourth foul just over two minutes into the second half. Between foul trouble and a focused Cavalier defense, Nowak was held to just four points.

Emily Lavin had eight points to lead the Eagles in scoring. Four Cabrini players scored in double figures with Sandone recording a game-high 12.

The Eagles (0-3) will have limited time to recover as they host Rosemont College, another local rival on Thursday night.
