Eagles Drop Contest To Cougars
The Eagles climbed out of a deep first-half deficit, but were unable to hold off the Cougars in the second half and fell by a final score of 74-60.
The Eagles and Cougars are now 1-2 in Freedom Conference play this season.
The Cougars started the game hot, hitting eight of their first 12 shots to build a 13-point lead with 13 minutes left in the first half. The Eagles began to gain ground with nine minutes left in the half with a layup by Shaquan Turk that started a 9-0 Eastern run. Eastern’s Ben Connor capped the run with a 3-pointer at 6:17 to bring Eastern within one point, 22-21.
The Eagles took their first lead at 25-24 with 4:37 to go in the first half with a fastbreak layup by Turk. Turk then hit a trey on the Eagles next possession. Turk finished with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds.
The Cougars tied the game at 30-30 with 1:22 left in the half, but Malcolm Garrison gave Eastern the 32-30 lead going into halftime with a fadeaway jumper from the baseline to beat the buzzer.
With 16:31 left in the second half, Garrison gave the Eagles their largest lead of the game, 43-37, with a 3-pointer. Garrison shot 4-for-9 from long range and finished with a team-high 16 points.
However, the Cougars then went on to score seven straight points and reclaim the lead and keep the lead for the game’s final 15 minutes.
The Eagles stayed within two possessions of the Cougars for most of the remainder of the game, but weren’t able to capitalize and went on a seven minute stretch with just two field goals scored.
Misericordia forward Steve Ware led all scorers with 22 points. He also finished with 13 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and three steals. Three other Cougars added double-digit points: Joe Busacca (13), Matt Greene, (11), and Erik Kerns (10).
The Eagles travel to King’s College on Saturday for a 3 p.m. start. The Eagles split their series with King’s last season.
