Parenti's Last-Second Layup Wards Off Devils
The Eagles, no strangers to games decided in the final possession this season, have now won three of their last four games. While they have already been eliminated from playoff contention, they played the spoiler role with Wednesday's win. The Devils had been tied for second in the Freedom Conference, but with the loss, were bumped into a three-way tie for third.
The Eagles led by 10 with 6:20 to play, but in exactly five minutes, the Devils clawed back to within one on a 15-4 run.
The Devils capitalized on a steal to score a go-ahead layup with 47 seconds left. Parenti, however responded with a layup with 33 seconds to go to put Eastern ahead 72-71.
Eastern's Caleb Knudsen came up with a big defensive rebound on the next possession and was fouled, but missed the free throw on the front end of a one-and-one. FDU-Florham's Will Green finished with a layup on the other end, giving FDU the 73-72 lead with 15 seconds to play. Green finished with a game-high 27 points.
The Eagles advanced the ball past half court and took a timeout with six seconds on the clock. Parenti received the ball after the inbounds pass and drove hard to the hoop, finishing the layup with 2.6 seconds remaining. The Devils took one last long heave at the buzzer, but the shot attempt fell well short.
Five Eagles finished in double figures. Shaquan Turk scored a team-high 16 points and also had eight rebounds. Parenti tallied 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Jordan Diggs added 11 points and Malcolm Garrison and Caleb Knudsen each chipped in 10.
Eastern out-shot FDU-Florham 47.6 percent to 42.3 percent. The Devils overall field goal percentage was tainted by their poor 18.5 percent shooting from the 3-point line (5-for-27).
Eastern looks to finish the season strong against DeSales University at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Eagles will be recognizing seniors Jimmie Willis, Ben Connor and Jordan Diggs prior to the game.
