Eagles Take Two In Return To Action

Kasey Williams unloaded the bases with a 3-RBI single against PSU-Harrisburg.

HARRISBURG, Pa.--Eastern Softball returned to action for the first time in 13 days, taking both games from the PSU-Harrisburg Lions in Thursday's doubleheader.

The Eagles improved to 5-4 while PSU-Harrisburg dropped to 5-5. Eastern took game one 5-4 and game two 8-5.

Freshmen pitchers Alyssa Welsh and Kristin Waters went the distance to earn the wins, giving the Eagles their first two-win day of the season. Head coach Brittany Stroop was impressed with the progress the team is making, especially against a strong hitting team like PSU-Harrisburg (batting .331 as a team). "We're a young team and we're still learning how to put a whole game and a doubleheader together," she said.

Eastern compiled seven hits in each game of the doubleheader. Ashton Tomlinson, Karlee Kerchersky and Melinda Kreimer each picked up two hits in the first game. In game two, Michelle Stehman and Kristen Waters earned two hits. Kasey Williams had just one hit for the day, but it was a big one in the second game when she hit a bases-clearing single.

Alyssa Welsh allowed just one run through the first six innings of game one and the Eagles held a 4-1 lead going into the seventh inning. The Eagles earned an important insurance run after Tomlinson led off the inning with a double and later scored on an infield error.

Welsh got into a jam in the bottom of the inning, allowing three runs, but worked her way out of it by inducing two ground outs right back to the mound.

In game two, the Eagles trailed 2-1 going into the sixth inning, but pitcher Kristen Waters helped her own cause with a two-RBI single to right field. With two outs and the bases loaded, Kasey Williams cleared the bases with a three-run single to put Eastern ahead 6-2. Williams scored on an error in the inning, and the Eagles picked up another unearned run in the seventh on a dropped third strike that allowed Kelsey Clever to score from third base.

PSU-Harrisburg threatened in the bottom of the seventh with three runs, but a ground out to first base ended the comeback for the Lions.

Eastern, after going nearly two weeks in between games, will play on Friday afternoon at Wilkes University for the first conference games of the year.
