Ferguson Scorches King's With Six Goals
Eagles' junior attack Grant Ferguson scorched the net with six goals, helping the Eagles improve to 7-4 this season. Ferguson's torrid scoring pace this spring gives him 36 goals this season and 111 for his career.
Dave Darling, last week's Freedom Conference Player of the Week, netted three goals while dealing out three assists. Andrew Travers, Eric Waibel, Dez Decker, Joe Palo and Kyle Gillam all scored as well. Palo's goal is his first as an Eagle.
Palo was dominant at the X on Wednesday, winning 20-of-28 faceoff opportunities.
After King's scored the game's opening goal, the Eagles went on a six-goal streak through the rest of the first quarter and six seconds into the second quarter. Palo won the opening faceoff of the second quarter and went all the way for the goal.
The Monarchs responded with four straight goals in the second half to pull within one goal, 6-5. Kyle Gillam snapped the Monarchs' string with 2:36 to go before halftime after Darling found him for the score.
The Monarchs came within one goal again with 5:47 to play in the third quarter, but on the next possesion, Cody Ridgway found Ferguson four his fourth goal of the game, giving Eastern a two-goal cushion 10-8. Ferguson put Eastern up 12-9 with 0:38 left in the third quarter and the Eagles held off the Monarchs through the rest of the fourth quarter to secure the conference-opening win.
Eagles' goalie Pat Groschan, who made 10 saves the entire game, saved six of those shots on goal in the fourth quarter to earn the win.
The Eagles have five conference games remaining in their regular season. They play FDU-Florham at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
