MAC Supports Victoria Graham

Eastern Women's Soccer and Women's Lacrosse student-athlete, Victoria Graham, has been playing sports with a rare disease known as Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS).

Last fall (2013), Victoria was hospitalized for a persistent, debilitating headache that left her with severe memory loss, an inability to recall words or events, numbness and loss of sensation in her limbs, and an inability to complete classwork. She was seen by doctors at Johns Hopkins who were not able to figure out why these things were happening. In January 2014, she was seen by Dr. Henderson, a world-renowned neurosurgeon and was diagnosed with low lying cerebellar tonsils (sometimes called Chiari malformation), severe craniovertebral instability and cervico-medullary syndrome.

In laymans terms, Victoria's brain is making its way out of her skull, which restricts the cerebrospinal fluid around the brain, the brain stem is being compressed, and the blood flow in her vertebral artery to her brain is being restricted.

On April 7th, Victoria underwent surgery to open up the bottom of her skull to allow more room for her brain, her skull will be reseated atop of her vertebral column to reduce the compression of her brain stem, and finally her C1 and C2 vertebrae will be fused to her skull.

This surgery, rehabilitation, and everything else involved will cost about $138,000. With insurance, Victoria's family needs to come up with about $45,000.

The Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has asked each student-athlete of the conference to donate $1 to support Victoria in her recent surgery and rehabilitation. If every student-athlete donates, $7,051 will be collected to help a fellow student-athlete recover. Victoria hopes to get back in the game in the fall of 2014.
