Eagles Expected To Make It Seven Straight

Last year's Eagles celebrated victory over Stevenson in the NCAA regional final.

ANNVILLE, Pa.—Eastern Volleyball, already ranked No. 15 in the country, is again selected as the top team in the Freedom Conference entering the 2014 season.

According to the Freedom Conference coaches’ preseason poll released on Tuesday, the Eagles are the unanimous favorites to win the league again in 2014. Eastern Volleyball, since joining the conference in 2008, has won the conference championship each year and has never lost a conference match.

In 2013, the Eagles took down Stevenson University in the NCAA regional final and advanced to the national quarterfinals where their season ended against a difficult squad from Emory University. Four Eagles earned All-American recognition last year: Rikki Schlager, Rylie Haas, Katrina Pisch and Kearby Benak. Benak, the only graduating senior on the team last season, was the team’s leader in kills (318) and aces (51).

The Eagles added three new players to the nest for 2014: freshman defensive specialist Miranda Kauffman, freshman right side hitter Morgan Shemonski and junior outside hitter Kara Tecl who recorded 268 kills last year at SUNY-Adirondack.

Eastern opens up the season with a four-game weekend tournament in Gettysburg, Pa., on Aug. 29 and 30. The Eagles will play 17 away matches, including showdowns with top-25 teams Emory (No. 2), Washington University in St. Louis (No. 11), Elmhurst (No. 12), and Christopher Newport (No. 25), before making their first appearance at home on Sept. 23 against King’s College.
